Speed and Weight Limits a Concern on Valley Road
November 09, 2009

After complaints from various residents the Town of Whitestown has requested a study of traffic on Valley Road in Oriskany.

As Valley Road is a County owned road and not a Town road the Town was unable to require weight limits but has, however, posted the upcoming Village weight limits along Valley Road to deter heavy weight vehicles from taking Valley Road as their route.

Speed reduction is done through a process with New York State.  We did request a speed study and have just received the results of such study.  On October 29 the Town was notified " Our study at Valley Road was jointly completed with the State Police.  We found that the need for a reduced speed limit has not been met."  Therefore, no change in speed will take place on Valley Road at this time.

Child Passenger Safety Week -- 9/12-18 -- Clinic & Inspections 9/12 in Whitestown
September 08, 2009

Town of Whitestown Police Department Urges Parents and Caregivers to Get Their Child Safety Seats Inspected.

Motor vehicle crashes, similar to the tragic incidents that have recently occurred in our area, are the leading cause of death for children age 3 to 6 and 8 to 14.  In 2007, 6,532 passenger vehicle occupants 14 and younger were involved in fatal crashes.  That is why the Whitestown Police Department is urging all parents and caregivers to attend the "National Seat Check Saturday" event on Saturday, September 12, 2009.  As part of Child Passenger Safety Week the Town of Whitestown Police Department will have certified technicians available to provide on-site child safety seat inspections and education from 10 am to 3 pm at the Whitestown Police Department, located at 8539 Clark Mills Rd.  The Whitestown Police Department employees three Certified Child Passenger Safety Seat Technicians.  Officer Frank McCully can be reached at fmccully@whitestown.net, Officer Tim Barone can be reached at tbarone@whitestown.netand Officer Shawn Occhipinti can be reached a socchipinti@whitestown.net.  Anyone with questions about Child Seats, or with questions about the upcoming event, are strongly urged to contact one of the above Officers.

"It's the responsibility of every parent and caregiver out there to make sure their children are safely restrained -- every trip, every time," said Officer Frank McCully of the Whitestown Police Department.  "We are urging everyone to get their child safety seats inspected.  When it comes to the safety of a child, there is no room for mistakes.:

In 2007, among children under 5, an estimated 358 lives were saved from the use of child safety seats and booster seats.  If all children under the age of 5 were restrained, and additional 71 children would have been saved.

For maximum child passenger safety, Officer McCully said parents and caregivers would refer to the following 4 Steps for Kids guidelines for determining which restraint system is best suited to protect children based on age and size:

  1. For the best possible protection keep infants i the back seat, in rear-facing child safety seats, as long as possible up to the height or weight limit of the particular seat.  At a minimum keep infants rear-facing until at least age 1 and at least 20 pounds.
  2. When children outgrow their rear-facing seats (at least 1 year and 20 pounds) they should ride in forwarding-facing child safety seats, in the back seat, until they reach he upper weight or height limit of the particular seat (usually around age 4 and 40 pounds).
  3. Once children have outgrown their forward-facing seats (usually age 4 and 40 pounds), they should ride in booster seats, in the back seat, until the vehicle seat belts fit properly.  Seat belts fit properly when the lap belt lays across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt fits across the chest (usually at age 8 or when they are 4'9" tall).
  4. When Children have outgrown their booster seats, (usually at age 8 or when they are 4'9" tall) they can us the adult seat belts in the back seat, if they fit properly (lap belt lays across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt fits across the chest).

Remember:  All children younger than 13 should ride in the back seat.

Trail System Needs Your Help
April 16, 2009

Spring is finally here and if you are one of the many residents who enjoy the beautiful Whitestown trail system you will certainly agree that not all users are being considerate of others. As the snow melted many signs of irresponsible pet owners appeared.

The town does supply pet waste bags and containers along the trail but unfortunately not all pet owners are using them. Please keep the trails clear and clean for use of the many families who enjoy a little exercise and outdoor activity.

These trails are a genuine asset to our community. We take pride in them and only ask that users help to keep them safe and clean for all to use.

We will soon be posting signs with the penalty for not cleaning up after your pet. It is breaking the law and there are definite penalties for non-compliance. Our police department will soon be out with their bike patrol on the trails looking for violators. Lets work together to keep our trails as enjoyable as possible.

Census 2010 Preliminary Work has Begun.
April 14, 2009

Us Census employees will be visiting every housing unit in every neighborhood between April and July this year.  The Census Bureau must compile information regarding addresses and exact locations of each place that people live in order to conduct an accurate census in 2010.  You will see Census employees wearing official identification and carrying hand-held computers throughout our community.   They are capturing physical addresses and their GPS coordinates for the purpose of the census.

We have received reports that they have already started in Whitestown and want all residents to be assured that they are working in their official capacity.  If approached for information you have every right to ask to see their identification.  Your cooperation with the census will enable the town to receive an accurate count.  Many state and federal funds are distributed based on population as well as representation in our various levels of government.  Please be counted, as it will benefit our community.  If you have any problems due to this, please feel free to contact the Whitestown Police Department at 736-1100.

Purchase is Finalized
February 19, 2009

Supervisor Chuck Gibbs and Town Board of the Town of Whitestown announced today that the town has finalized its acquisition of the former St. Anne's property located at 8539 Clark Mills Road for a purchase price of $630,000. The purchase will have no effect on raising taxes, as the Town will be renewing a bond that will expire at the end of this year.

The property will be used for the consolidation of Town buildings, which will provide more efficient and convenient Town Offices for the residents of Whitestown. Once renovations are complete the Tax and Assessment Offices will move from 113 Main Street in Whitesboro to the new location on Clark Mills Road. A possible drive-through window has been proposed to make it more convenient for our senior and handicapped residents to pay their taxes. The offices that have already been re-located to this site are the Town Clerk, Town Police, Codes Enforcement, Finance and Personnel. The new facility will also include a meeting room for the Town Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Board and Grievance Board.

Plans for the Church building are not finalized at this time. Suggestions have been made to utilize this facility as a possible Senior and Youth Center. The Town Board will be looking into and considering various options for this building.

Renovations to facilitate the consolidation of offices will be completed by town employees and are expected to be completed sometime in May. These improvements are budgeted at $150,000.

The Whitestown Town Courts will also be moving. They will be re-located to our Westmoreland Road site by the end of 2009. A $30,000 grant has been awarded from the NYS Unified Court System to bring the courts into compliance. An additional grant of $15,000 has been received to purchase any necessary equipment. Judge Richard Montgomery, a lifelong Oriskany resident, died on October 21 with his loving family at his side after a courageous battle with emphysema.

Dick had served for numerous years as Oriskany Village Justice, retiring on October 1 of this year, for health reasons.  He was a Marine Veteran and had been employed as a New York State Trooper, retiring as a zone sergeant in 1988.

The Town of Whitestown would like to express their sincere condolences to his family, especially to his wife of 47 years, Lois.  Lois is employed in the Finance and Personnel office of the Town of Whitestown.

Budget Hearings Set for 2008 Budgets
October 23, 2007

The Town Board will hold a special session on Wednesday, November 7 at 7 PM for the purpose of hearing comments from Town property owners concerning the 2008 Special District Budgets and at 7 :15 PM for the General Town and Highway Budgets at the Whitestown Community Center.

Each year the Town Board struggles to provide the residents and businesses within our town the best possible services for the least possible tax cost.  This year is no exception.  With ever increasing costs including gasoline, heating sources, retirement contributions, health insurance premiums, janitorial and maintenance supplies, highway maintenance materials, let alone vehicle and office equipment maintenance and replacement -  the challenge grows daily.  With that in mind the Town Board has been able to keep in tact all previous services, planned for some improvements to our park system, and even planned to upgrade some of our much needed equipment with a proposed tax increase of only $2.00 per month per $100,000 of assessed value.

The Town Board will continue to search within the proposed budget for other savings to pass along to the residents and business owners in the town.  The final budget will be put in place soon.  Your input to the Board Members will assure them that they are on the right fiscal track for the town.

Although the town tax is the smallest tax paid by any property owner in our town we do not take it lightly.  County, school, village and special district taxes are all added to our small town tax when referring to property taxes for a given parcel.  We want all to remember that the actual town tax is a very small component of the total tax obligation for a property owner.  We, the Town of Whitestown, take our fiscal responsiblilty seriously but also take our obligation to provide services to our residents as seriously.

Together we can continue to make Whitestown a special place to reside and one that safeguards your tax dollars to provide you the best possible services for the least possible tax dollars.

This extension of the Whitestown Trail System was made possible through a New York State Community Capital Assistance Program Grant which was obtained through the efforts of New York State Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito.  The construction of the sidewalks was done by the Whitestown Highway Department under the direct supervision of Highway Superintendent Sal Granato.  The crew began the 2006 construction season by installing piping and drainage along the 3,000 feet of roadside.  This not only allowed the town to install the sidewalks but also eliminated many large deep ditches which were rather hazardous in inclement weather.  Vehicular traffic will also benefit from this project.  Once the drainage system was completed the concrete sidewalk was laid.  Highway crews worked diligently all summer to complete the project before the 2006 construction season ended.

Two Long Time Employees Retire
August 07, 2006

July 2006 saw the retirements of two long standing employees of the Town of Whitestown.  Both Richard (Dick) Patterson and Stin Seven (formerly Russell Orilio) have left our employ to enjoy retirement.

Dick Patterson came to the Whitestown Highway Department right after high school and has remained a member of the crew since.  First hired as a laborer in 1969 he was promoted to Motor Equipment Operator in 1979.  A position he held until his retirement.

Stin Seven first came to the Whitestown Police Department in 1981 as a part-time Police Officer.  In 1987 he became a full time officer and in 1993 was promoted to Sergeant.  A position he held until his retirement.

Both men spend endless hours on the town roads making our community a safer place.  Whether it was patroling or plowing our many streets, answering police complaints or highway complaints both men served our town to the best of their ability.  Our town employees all serve the community in differing ways but all serve to make this a better place to live.  Many thanks to Dick and Stin.  May you both have a healthy and happy retirement.

Town Board Responds to Heat Wave
August 01, 2006

In an effort to combat the unusually high temperatures expected today (August 1) and tomorrow the Whitestown Town Board has opened the Ice Facility on Westmoreland Road from 12 Noon each day until 4PM as a respite from the heat for any one needing an air conditioned atmosphere.  There is plenty of area to sit and visit with your fellow citizens and get cooled off.  Parents should bring activities for their children as the ice rink itself will not be in operation.  No ice skating will be available but plenty of cool air will be.

Also, the summer sports camps sponsored by the town at the Whitestown Town Park will not hold any afternoon sessions on August 1 or 2.  All camps will take place from 8:30 to 11:30 each day to avoid the hottest part of the day.  The Dunham Manor playground will only be staffed from 10 to Noon also.

Please take all necessary precautions to avoid heat related illnesses and health complications.  Drink plenty of liquids, avoid the hot afternoon heat and check on the elderly and young.  We all love summer but this is a litle too hot and can create health problems.  Please contact your medical provider if you suspect any complications from the heat.

Message from our New Town Clerk
January 26, 2006

After taking my oath of office on January 1st I eagerly opened my office to the public on the first business day of the year, January 3rd.  Since that date I have met many wonderful Whitestown residents as they have come to my office to purchase dog licenses, renew or receive handicap parking permits, purchase marriage certificates, pick up building permits or renew the annual applications for the many local bell jars.  I truly look forward to serving all the needs of the residents of Whitestown.

One of the major functions of my office is to receive and process the paperwork to timely pay any vendors doing business with the town.  As with any transition, paperwork may have slipped through the cracks and I do not want any vendor to think we are not paying our obligations. If any vendor has not received timely payment of invoices please contact my office at 736-4224 to verify we have your paperwork or start the process to receive payment.  Our voucher system requires that all vendors' claims be received in my office by the Friday preceding the 3rd Wednesday of the month in order to be paid in any given month.  The Town pays all vouchers once a month after the Town Board reviews and audits all claims at the Voucher Meeting held the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  Please feel free to contact my office with any questions.  My Deputy Town Clerk, Terry Sardelli, or I will be happy to help you.

I look forward to meeting and serving our many Town residents.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

Mary Finegan, Town Clerk

Please do not place trash to the curb before your week. We take pride in our town's appearance and can not have trash hanging around for weeks on end. Violators will be asked to remove items until the week of their pickup.

Highway Superintendent Sal Granato and his staff will be happy to answer any of your concerns regarding this program.
Spring brings increased activity on many projects.
May 19, 2005
With the onset of good weather many town projects are quickly moving forward.

Thanks to the support of Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito the Town was able to secure a $100,000 grant for the construction of additional sidewalk within the township. Highway Superintendent Sal Granato has willingly accepted the challenge to install the sidewalks along Westmoreland Road to complete the trail system in that area. His able crews are installing drainage pipes and filling in ditches to accomodate the sidewalk they will soon be building. This much needed improvement to our town will be completed in the next few months.

Our Buildings and Grounds department has been very busy getting the parks and playgrounds ready for spring use. With all that work to do they are also in full steam completing the Restroom facility at the Dunham Manor Playground. This project, which is funded by a grant from NYS which was obtained with the assistance of Senator Ray Meier, has greatly enhanced the Dunham Manor Playground facility. A waterfront deck and new playground equipment were installed last year. With the help of the BOCES program the Restroom/Storage Facility will be completed for this season's use.

Other activities include finalization of the land preparation for a possible Town Park expansion, repainting areas of the community center and ice arena, and the installation of safety lighting at Harts Hill and Westmoreland Road school roadsides. The safety lighting was a result of a grant from RoAnn Destito's office.

We have been very fortunate to receive these grants and to have available to us qualified town personnel to complete these projects. Many thanks to the Highway Department and Buildings and Grounds Department for taking on these projects and doing such a fine job with them.
